I will be interning at Fort Defiance Intian Hospital which is located on the Navajo reservation in Arizona. I have always been interested in medicine and hope to use this internship to decide whether that is the right career for me. I will be riding along with the paramedics which is an amazing opportunity to see the Navajo community and experience a different culture. I will also be able to go into the emergency room with them but due to my age i will not be able to be in the ER for the entire time.
The Fort Defiance Indian Hospital was started in 1832, when congress funded the vaccinations against small pocks for the natives. In the 1860s the hospital was used to treat US soldiers at the military base there. After President Ulysses S. Grant passed his peace policy, Fort Defiance was used as a place to improve the health and hygiene of the Indians. It was not until 1938 that an actual hospital facility was constructed in Fort Defiance, though, there were other hospitals on the reservation before then. The newest hospital was opened in 2002 and serves a big area of the Navajo nation providing a wide range of healthcare.
